John Peel Tribute, Peel Sessions Compilation

So it was John Peel’s anniversary of death last week. As I recalled the manner in which I found out he had died (via text message, signing on in Partick job centre) and how utterly gutting it was, and how massively he is still missed by everyone with half a clue about music, I thought a wee tribute compilation was in order.  I decided to make a compilation made up purely of tracks from Peel sessions, which quickly got out of hand as I realised just how many Peel sessions I actually had. So I’ve ended up splitting it over two volumes. It’s pretty mental that all of these recordings were fundamentally part of the same radio show, split up as they are over four decades with basically every genre of modern music represented. The guy brought us Captain Beefheart and also Bong-Ra. Led Zeppelin and Lightning Bolt. Pink Floyd and Polysics. There will never be another John Peel.

Marcellus Pittman - Razz 09

I really feel that this tune deserves a post of its own after hearing it on the (brilliant) Theo Parrish and Benji B mix dsco posted recently. The juxtaposition of the rigid, 808 (?) percussion, especially them insistent high hats, with the lazy, live-sounding melody does me right every time.

First time in ages I've heard something and immediately rewound it, and again, and again...

Thanks Marcellus

Rock n Roll Vinyl Rips - Bunker Hill & Link Wray

If you've ever heard "The Girl Can't Dance" by Bunker Hill, you've got an idea what kind of incredible capacities a human voice can have. The song altogether, with Bunker's mind-blowin' caveman-alike hollering is so way beyond belief, that there ain't just enough superlative words to describe its invincibility. Bring it together with Bunker's other early sixties novelty masterpieces, and you've got there a load of the most powerful black rock'n'roll ever made.

Under the guidance of Vernon Wray he recorded three frantic secular singles, all backed by Vernon's brother Link Wray along with the Raymen. The debut disc, "Hide and Go Seek", was Bunker Hill's biggest hit, cracking the top 40 in 1962 and becoming a regional smash in the DC area. Two highly charged singles followed, "Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf" and the unruly "The Girl Can't Dance", and while neither did much business in their day, both enjoy serious dance floor racket time today.

Rock n Roll Vinyl Rips - It's Monk Time!

1967 UNRELEASED Heavy FUZZ Version from Mega Rare One-sided Acetate) This is the one to change the History Books. So far we were lead to believe that the Monks, after their LP failed to Chart tuned it down and tried a couple more pop tunes before vanishing in oblivion. The truth is far from that: Bound by their contract with Polydor, the Monks were unable to develope their music the way they really wanted to. In 1967 the Monks went on their own time and money into Tonstudio Pfanz near Hamburg to record this smashing Fuzz driven Freak Beat Version of Pretty Suzanne behind Polydors back!!Trying to fuck over Germanys biggest Record Label? It doesnt get more Punk than that in my book. Sure enough they got in trouble for it and this killer Version remained unreleased to this day. First ever Legit Re-issue in full Cooperation with the Monks. Mastered from the Original ( Only Known) Acetate. In Amazing High Fidelity Fuzz Sound.

Rock n Roll Vinyl Rips - Our Boy Roy.

Two gems from his earlier rockabilly hellcat Sun years. I found this original pressing on the floor of a used record store in New Mexico for less than 50p. You can imagine my delight.

I kick arse for the LORD!

Al was asking for Reverend Julius Cheeks recordings, I knew I didn't have any albums, but the name totally rang a bell. Turns out it's from a track off of this album. It's a great collection of funk laden gospel, every tracks a winner in my book . . . hope you enjoy it

Es Fs Ts

Ahoy here!

I've been meaning to post on the blog for a good while now. Most of you probably know me, but for reasons unknown my name is Duke Yowie. Please find attached the first copy of my solo efforts recorded between 2001 and 2010. Recently my computer blew up, and I lost a lot of my work, about 200 tracks or so. Some of it was already retained in digital and tape format. (At the time windows 2000 was very stable) So this is a selection of what pieces I have left. I have been trying to compile it all for a while using various mixing methods, but I just want to draw a line. It's really just a fucked up mess. So here it is "Es Fs Ts" (Other people are fucking assholes") compressed into just under 40 minutes.

Black Francis - 'Der Golem'

Black Francis of Pixies fame was commissioned to write a score for the 1920 German silent horror classic 'Der Golem' for the San Francisco film festival in 2008. He'll be releasing the music on November 16th as one hour 'Rock Opera'. Here's the film in it's entirety with Black Francis' score. The Golem is mythical monster which was created to protect the Jews of Prague but ends up running amok . . .

Los Tentakills - Surf Riders

Los Tentakills - Surf Riders from Al Hotchkiss on Vimeo.

Our infamous version of The Lively Ones Surf Rider. Get on your Architeuthis and ride!

You all know me. You know what I do for a living. I'll catch this bird for ya but it ain't going to be easy. Bad fish. It's not like going down to the pond chasing bluegills or tommy cods. This squid. Swallow you whole. Little shaking. Little tenderizing, down you go. Now we gotta do it quick. That will bring back all the tourists and put all your businesses on a paying basis. But it's not going to be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks chief. I'll find him for 3 but I'll catch him and kill him for 10. Now you gotta make up your minds. You want to stay alive anti up. Want to play it cheap. Be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers I don't want no mates, there's too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head. The tail. The whole damn thing. Mr Mayer. Chief. Ladies and gentlemen.

American OTT Pop

This track only really possible with modern computer editing, compression and multi tracking vocals: amerie - one thing. It takes vocal maniulation to such insane levels that the impossibleness of what is actually been sung amazes me.

The song is entirely created from a bar from oh calcutta by the meters http://hypem.com/track/924382

The second track i want to put up is again entirely dependent on computers, as timbaland just plain stole it from some poor coder.

And the pimped up pop version

Its a fine line between good and piss poor. These are some of the few tracks i think retain any class while still being unashamedly over the top modern american productions. Any others?

Sparks - Kimono My House (1974)

I fucking love Sparks. Been listening to this album all day and have decided to post it due to it's extreme brilliance. Sparks always struck me as what Queen would have sounded like if they were New York art fags instead of Cambridge University art fags. They have the high pitched vocals, the inventive and soaring guitar, the same over the top bombastic lyrical content and just the sheer creativity, intelligence and inventiveness. Glam with a brain. When they played on the old grey whistle test that old fogey dude that presents it described them as a cross between Frank Zappa and The Monkees. In my book that's high praise, not sure if he meant it that way. They did an album with Giorgio Moroder for god sake. They're still touring and recording interesting stuff, writing film scores and musicals and all kinds of shit, always creative, always pushing the boundaries. This album is their finest hour in my book. If all you know is 'this town aint big enough for the both of us', get this and check out how great every track is.

The Milkshakes - Brand New Caddilac (Big Beat EP)

The Milkshakes were a very prolific group, recording nine records in their six years together. Childish and Hampshire split the lead vocal duties and the band was very much a blend of Childish's primitive songwriting and Hampshire's more melodic leanings. The group also masterminded and backed a Medway girl group, the Delmonas. The Milkshakes broke up in 1984 and Childish, Brand, and Agnew went on to form Thee Mighty Caesars where Childish's raw punk-blues could roam untainted by any semblance of professionalism.

Rock n Roll Vinyl Rips - Trogglomania!

Amazing snarling 1966 punk b-side from the west countries finest "I Want You" And the added bonus of the comedy gold picture sleeve in which they appear to be sporting knitted jumpers their Grannies humbly gave them for Christmas whilst still trying to remain mildly tough looking.

Also worthy of note are the hilarious Troggs Tapes. In which they state they thought the A-side to this record was "Fucking terrible"

Rock n Roll Vinyl Rips - The Originator

A man who needs no introduction. Original pressing of the 1963 Diddling EP. A nice mix of surfy instrumentals and savage nursery rhyme rock n roll.

Rock n Roll Vinyl Rips - The Painted Ship

An amazing reissue of a cult 66 Garage classic. Remastered at Abbey Road from the master tapes.

The Painted Ship - Garage Greats

Alumni of Vancouver, BC's largely unheralded '60s music scene, this quartet consisted of buckskin-clad Bill Hay (vocals), Bob Rowden (guitar), Ken Wain (keyboards) and Barry Rowden (drums). The band cut two late-'60s singles with the London label: "Little White Lies" b/w "Frustration" and "Audience Reflections" b/w "And She Said 'Yes.'" "Frustration" seethes with primal angst. Its structure recalls the Castaways' "Liar Liar," with organ runs from Uzbekhistanm -- or the Hindu Kush. "Lies," Hays said, was "a parody of a swaggering rock star." The band was told to record "something more commercial than 'Frustration.'" They did just that. Frat-house rhythms and sneered, snotty vocals make "Lies" a true punk classic. A monster hit in BC, the single met with less acclaim internationally, despite U.S. airplay. The Painted Ship floundered

    Rock n Roll Vinyl Rips

Been collecting old 45rpm records for a while and ripping them via the modern black magick of the usb turntable. Here's an old soul/rockabilly/blues number for starters:

Betty James - I'm A Little Mixed Up (Cee-Jay Records)

Betty was a night club singer (and song writer, as she wrote this one) from Baltimore, MD; her husband also played guitar in the group. She was discovered by budding record entrepreneurs (who later founded the great NYC based Carnival record label) Joe Evans and Bobby Johnson. The single was released by their New York label Cee Jay and the song became a local hit, where it popped up on the radar of Chess records who licensed it for national release. Betty released two more singles for Chess then disappeared.

World, meet Darjan Kocmut aka Darko Jones.

This legendary Slovenian lived on the floor below me in a grotty student panelak - the uniform style of socialist housing that would shelter the ''new man shorn of bourgeoise individualism'' - situated on the outskirts of Prague and presented as Hostivar's ''deluxe accommodation'' prior to my arrival. Darko was a reliable friend who was always up for a bevvy and rolled and poured for me when I was so wasted that I vomited on my own bedroom carpet. I moved out of that student hellhole after a few months of torture, unable to bear the foul stench of my 6ft.2 Lithuanian room-mate's stinking feet as they stuck out the end of his narrow bed in a tiny box room for two that wasn't large enough for even one. I haven't seen or heard from Darko since and all that remained was the fond memory of his solid companionship. Until today.

People in the UK are living in a bubble. Get off that fucking smarmy detention centre island and live somewhere different for a while. Release your inner Darko. Ride your Life! Riiiiiide youuuur life!

    Awesome 80's Action Movie Mixtape

This mix is such a brilliant idea. It follows the time honoured arc of your classic 80's action film, from the solemn realisation that the only honourable path is to take up arms and vanquish the foe, through training, proving yourself worthy, fighting your way to the final showdown before administering the greatest beating of all time on your  unsuspecting nemesis, showing him his still beating heart as he dies in the knowledge that he has been comprehensively defeated by a superior force, cursing the day he was born as you triumphantly ride off with his wife.

In order to create this masterpiece, the DJ's DJA and Dirty South Joe have drawn on the soundtracks of classics such as bloodsport, kickboxer, the last dragon and of course all the Rocky movies. It's a great idea, expertly executed. I might start doing weights just so I can listen to this while I do it.

    Solomon Burke 1940 - 2010

Well, after 70 years, 17 million records sold, 21 children and 90 grand children, original soul man Solomon Burke has died.  How many real Soul Men are left, I wonder? How many of his label mates at the legendary Atlantic records back in the sixties are still going? Aretha Franklin for one . . .can’t be many more though. According to the news I’m reading, the cause of death isn’t clear, but how many 30 stone 70 year olds are there? Solomon enjoyed his life right to the end, performing live, recording, and writing music. It’s fitting that he died on the way to a gig, as he says in this interview in the telegraph last year, ‘I’ll sing as long as I have breath’

    Throbbing Gristle Tour Promo

I saw this promo on Chris Carter of Throbbing Gristle's blog, it's apparently the first ever promotional video they've made, which is quite mental  . . .wish I was able to go and see them on tour, you Leeds punters might be able to go to one, where's Minehead? Dirty-Carter Experimental Sound Generating Instrument test from Chris Carter on Vimeo.

    Tech details:
The Dirty Carter Experimental Sound Generating Instrument uses a dual 4-stage shift register. Each register is controlled independently. Two oscillators are used per register: one as a clock, the other as input data that is cascaded through the four stages. The outputs from the stages are mixed together. A fast clock rate produces a crude form of wavetable synthesis, whilst a slow clock rate creates audible pulses and clicks. The clock speed and the data input’s frequency are controlled by touch electrodes/pads. By tilting the instrument, sound from both the 4-stage shift registers can be mixed together. Glitchy noise, deep drones and percussive peeps!

Could have been off a Ninja Tune record, yesterday. Amazin.

    Resident Advice

Well - two pieces of news on RA today, one good, one bad.

Start with the bad news, Aaron-Carl just died of cancer. RIP to the big gay black man with the canny set of lungs. Gone far too young.

On to the good stuff, Sandwell District will be releasing a full-length album at some point this month. You can have a listen to RA's first ever interview podcast, featuring Dave Sumner, AKA Function, one half of Sandwell.

PS no news about The Residents, I just wanted to use their picture.

PPS bugger it, let's just have some Residents anyway... crazy bastards that they are.

The Fall at Calton Studios Edinburgh 2010

Here is a decent recording of The Fall kicking off this year's UK tour at the Calton studios we all know and love. Unfortunately Mark E Smith stormed off in a huff (how out of character) after twenty minutes but it's twenty good minutes and the band sound excellent, I really wish I was in a country where I might have a hope of seeing them. I love the new album. If you all haven't heard 'Our Future, Your Clutter' then go get it straight away, it's a great Fall album, I dig it heavily. If for some strange reason you need convincing further than just blindly accepting my authoritative say so, listen to 'Mexico Wax Solvent'.in the youtube video below, it contains the lines

"It's the winner of Britain's lowest prices
I don't bake rice with screwdrivers
I fry chicken with a trowel"

    Semi for Detached

There's another right beast of a techno night coming up in Leeds next week (Sat 9th Oct). I shall definitely be in attendance, and if any of the UK-based homies fancy it, feel free to hit me up for accommodation and the like. I'll bring the 140s.

Detatched (excuse the misspelling, but that's how the organisers misspell it. Imagine misspelling the name of your own night... muppets. However, they do know a thing or two about techno, so we'll try to forgive them.)

    BAS MOOY
ANCIENT METHODS live + dj sets
    RADIAL live
    NICK DUNTON live/dj
    MIKE HUMPHRIES live
    HORIZONTAL GROUND live/dj

Ancient Methods were responsible for the outstanding ssgmix 'Fashion is not a part of it' from last year, get it from mnmlssg.blogspot.com if you haven't already. Rumbling Birmingham-sound techno brought bang up to date by two geeks from Berlin. Bob on.

Mike Humphries used appear fairly regularly at The Orbit, goes by various pseudonyms, including H and Cold Dust (with Jon Nuccle) and ran the label Red Seal. There's a few of his tracks on the quite frankly fucking ridiculous 'Fuse Presents... Dave Clarke' mix. Old school Leeds crew innit. Proper banging.

Horizontal Ground is one of the more interesting new labels to have appeared with the current resurgence in real techno and is responsible for the mysterious and excellent faceless-techno-bastard series by 19.454.18.5.25.5.18 and his labelmates
19.26.1.18.5, et al. Dunno who will be representing the label, but it should be beaut regardless.

This is one of my favourite slow-burn creeping bangers. Watch out for that snare - someone's going to lose an eye/finger if they're not careful:
