We’ll tak a right gude-willy waught, for auld lang syne.

What yis uptae fur hogmanay? I'm going to a gay mardi gras themed party on the beach. It'll be interesting.

Moving house?

Alright youse, just a few tunes that have been on my mind recently and coincidentally in keeping with the theme of Frazer's last post.

A classic that a certain pvk told me just had a re-print this year:

And a belter from this year from the appropriately named EP Vocals for Everyone by FCL:

I kind of prefer this one pitched up just a wee bit like in the mix I discovered it.

this sampled that

Now then,

I just had a moment of 'this sampled that' realisation whilst going through some records to sate a Diana Ross craving and thought I'd share it and ask a related question.

This Omar S belter 'Day' uses a sample from The Supremes' "Come See About Me' to brilliant effect.

Omar S 'Day'

The Supremes 'Come See About Me'

So, does anyone know which house tune uses a sample from Diana Ross' 'Love Hangover', below? (from about 2:45 into the video) I can't for the life of me think what it is and it's right frustrating.

Some toasty warm garage house from back in the balmy haze that was June of this year. Because quite frankly it's cold enough in here to freeze the cassocks off a brass monk.

The weather outside is frightful

My favourite Christmas song (well, maybe - one of anyway) just to get us all in the mood. What a belter. Some bittersweet melancholy at Christmas. This and Fairytale of New York.

Was pleased to see ole Jona getting his proper juice in the recent Ikea advert which used this song.

Rrritalin

Absolute belter from coin-op records. Don't know how they do it: oodles of compression, attention to detail yet all over the place, hint of dubstep but still unmistakably massive techno. I seriously need to get out more.

Rest in Peace Captain Beefheart

The great man is dead. This calls for some kind of mammoth tribute compilation which I'll get on right away. Can't even explain how much this guy influenced the way I think about and listen to music. Sad day man . . .

Grasscut

Thanks to Frazer for the glacial music. I thought we might need a bit of cheering up after that. I went to the ninjatunes 20th anniversary party here in Prague a few nights ago ... this band were new to my ears ... purveyors of electronica that, live, is strongly influenced by niun niggung mouse on mars. Be warned, they are exceedingly pretentious. One of them looks and dresses like a high school physics teacher. The other looks like a classically trained public-schoolboy-twat. They come off as quite ironical in performance. Their instrumental bits are better, I think. Have a listen anyway.

William MF Basinski

Now then,

William Basinki is a guy that needs a big up on here. As a precursor to a larger post I've been intending to write about some bits of ambient/post rock/drone from the past few years that float my boat, I thought I'd take the time to highlight this guy, who makes some of the most unassuming, atmospheric and downright fucking powerful music that I've ever heard. (I'm aware that this is a mighty big claim, but it's not meant to be in any way hyperbolic. I really do love him.)

Classically trained and enamoured of the tape loops that can be created using reel-to-reel recorders, Basinski is perhaps most famous, relatively speaking, for his 'Disintegration Loops' albums. This is a group of albums that came about whilst he was archiving decades old analogue tape loops to digital format. The tapes broke down further and further until they essentially 'died' during recording, hence 'Disintegration Loops'.

Basinski's better tunes have the ability to wring me out emotionally and there are still certain Mondays when I know better than to listen to his stuff.

I'm not going to write too much more from here, preferring instead to let the music speak for itself

And we're off:

Melancholia - Three and a bit minutes of perfection

El Camino Real - Uplifting, haunting, so bloody deep

D P3 - See the above comments

Vivian & Ondine - Here's the first 10 minutes of a 45 minute track. A personal favourite.

I'll leave it there cos I'm off to think of synonyms for 'glacial'.

Merry Christmas to the pure mad massive!

p.s. the 'MF' up there in the title in between his first and last names is purely my own doing.

Acoustica: Alarm Will Sound Performs Aphex Twin

Heard this and it reminded me of the school band performing Aphex that Jim posted a while ago . . .I won't post he whole album cos I figure these guys are a twenty piece chamber orchestra who probably see little enough of their royalties as it is, so go and buy this CD and encourage some incredibly talented musicians to keep doing what they do.

Instead I'll just post the three songs on this album which appear on my favourite Aphex Twin record, the 'Richard D James' album from 1996, those tunes being Logon Rock Witch, Fingerbib, and '4'. What's that, '4'? you say? surely those snare rushes are impossible for human hands to play! But no, apparently not, look

weblergh

Some random thoughts of the day... mainly cos I'm sick of looking at that Orb Live picture already. Here's a different one. By Pieter Bruegel.

Firstly, more reasons to like Sex Trothler. He first got my attention with his bloody marvellous RA Podcast from last summer which keeps popping onto my playlists on a semi-irregular basis, thanks to its general smacky-wacky-jackingness, the weird and wonderful versions of various tracks that he rocks out, his sleazy voiceover... and those ad breaks of course. Now he's done one for Bodytonic that is different but equally beaut. Still has a strangely humorous backdrop but with more of the head-down party beats this time, and less of the lounge lizard disco-pop. Get on it here.

DJ Harvey (he of Black Cock fame...) has been on my list of folk to investigate further for a while now, so I had a listen to this set on the seemingly endless stream of excellent mixes that come from Rico Passerani's Soundcloud account. You'll be pleased to hear that it's ace - back to more of the lounge lizard disco-pop again.

Nextly, this week's 6Mix is by Christopher Tubbs, a New Zealander currently residing in London. It's described as Afro Techno Balearic or somesuch bollocks, and he is frankly a whiny little Kiwi prick, but his selection of tunes is spot on. Have a wee listen anyway.

There's a good radio drama on the Beeb at the mo (yeah I know - I'm just a sucka for a bit of radio drama though) called Eye of the Cricket. It's a detective story set in New Orleans - based on a James Sallis novel, who I'd never heard of, but he's a jazz writer when he's not writing detective novels, and his brother's a reasonably well-known philosopher. Anyway, it's an interesting take on a detective story so far, lots of literary and jazz references. The reason I post this on here is (a) cos it's good and you should have a listen to it and (b) the soundtrack itself is ace... Sun House, Patty Kline, and some Chris Smither. Which made me want to say that...

Chris Smither is fucking amazing (just in case I haven't already bent your ear about it at any point in the last 15 years). He's an American singer and guitarist in the blues/folk vein with some mean finger-pickin styles inspired by/completely blagged off Mississippi John Hurt. His songwriting is the real stone cold killer though - deep, meaningful, witty by turns, never cliched or contrived, and he pulls off some of the most unexpected rhyming couplets you're ever likely to come across. I'd recommend the songs Winsome Smile, Happier Blue, and I Am The Ride to give you a first taster. I would have put links to these songs on Youtube but they're not on there. You won't regret buying any of his albums anyway, especially Happier Blue, Up On The Lowdown, or Small Revelations. If you must use some other means to test it out first, do so... Then buy 'em all, cos he no doubt needs the support!

And finally, this made me smile on Monday morning. Had to conclude that I really would quite like a Button myself. Amongst her more impressive achievements are this and this.

Thank you. That is all.

PS actually it's not. For any of you who haven't been keeping up to date with the latest audio emissions from the GK Machine, get on it here. He's just done his first ever remix. Congrats Machine. And you should download some of his mixes whilst you're there, cos they're just as brilliant as ever. Lovely.

That is all. No really.

The Orb at The Barras

"What were the skies like when you were young?"

"A bit dreich, kinda shitey and grey. They went on forever... as a matter of fact... All black and white and grey and bilin'."

Just spotted that The Orb at the Barrowlands in 97 is this week's 6Music Classic Concert. Haven't listened to it yet like. Wasn't there either - about a year too early for me and Glas Vegas.

Anyways, enjoy... bbc.co.uk/i/w8q1y.

Windowlicker - X-Rated lick

Remember this one?

Run Jeremy, AKA Trentemoller re-edit. I like it simply because it turns a tune I love into something a wee bit more pleasing to the ears; the filthy genius of the original made (dare I say it?) danceable. I find it a bit weird that this record even exists, I can't imagine Richard D. authorising or approving of this at all. I guess if it was a promo then he couldn't do anything about it anyway.

Hahaha, having just checked the wikipedia entry as I typed this:

Also included is a sample of James's French then-girlfriend speaking in her native tongue saying J'aime faire des croquettes au chien, translating to "I love making dog nuggets".

Lynchian techno

Well who'd have thunk it? David Lynch goes electronic.

“I was just sitting and these notes came and then I went down and started working with Dean [Hurley, his engineer] and then these few notes, ‘I want to have a good day, today’ came and the song was built around that,”

David Lynch - Good Day Today [Original] by Sunday Best

Appropriately weird indeed.

Somehow hadn't made the connection before but Jamie xx of The xx was the producer of GSH's I'm New Here album from the start of the year. I only knew that he was the owner/manager of XL Recordings.

Anyway - apparently he's just done a remix album of I'm New Here called We're New Here, which is available for listening and downloading purposes right aboot hyar. Might actually go listen to some of The xx now, having dismissed them out of hand previously.

Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson 1955 - 2010

Just read the sad news that Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson of Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV and  Coil has died aged 55.  Here's an interview he gave in The Quietus a couple of months ago.

"we are all only temporary curators of our present bodies, which will all decay, sooner or later. In a hundred years or so ALL the humans currently alive will have died. I take great comfort in knowing, with certainty, that thing that makes us special, able to enrich our own lives and those of others, will not cease when our bodies do, but will be just starting and new (and hopefully even better) adventure..."

Tiger & Woods @ La Cheeta

The highlight of my weekend, and without a doubt one of the best live shows I've seen in a while. I went to see Leftfield at the Barras first on Friday night. As much as nostalgia is a powerful thing, I can't say I was particularly blown away. No new material and slightly gimmicky reworkings of their old classics, backed by a big shiny-shiny screen and over-the-top-visuals. The thousands of Glesga folk who saw them over Saturday and Sunday will no doubt disagree with me and call me a moany c*nt, mind.

So on to La Cheeta for this later on. They blew my socks off: 2 cheeky italian boys cracking out driving disco funk edits. Heavily working their MPC's, it's not always easy to impress nowadays with an Ableton set. The lure of Disco brought a pleasant balance to the crowd mixture. And by this I mean that it wasn't a sausage party like most of the other nights in there that play the music I love.

Here we go then:

You can find a few other tunes on youtube or their myspace, the vinyl is very rare apparently.

Jus' Ed - I'm Comin' (Levon Vincent Remix)

Now then,

I've been buying stuff on Jus Ed's label Underground Quality for a few years now, however nothing has previously whacked me as much as the tune below. This is massive for me at the moment. A true house banger: deep but rousing, driving and soothing. I only wish it was twice as long.

Weatherall or not

Hello all - been ages since my last post, so apologies for that. In the middle of refurbishing a house at the moment, so I'm busy-busy all the fooking time. In fact I could barely work out how to create a new post, that's how out of the loop I am.

Anyway, just wanted to post this great wee 6Mix I'm currently listening to. Andrew Weatherall plays the music which inspired Screamadelica. Only ten minutes in and it's already genius... enjoy!

Get on it.

Fela Kuti Documentary (1982)

Fela Kuti - Music Is The Weapon from Green Grin on Vimeo.

An excellent 53 minute documentary about the force of nature that was Fela Kuti.

I think I might post some of his music too as I'm getting Fela on the brain over here, the idea of making a tribute compilation is pretty daunting though, with 30 years of music to chose from and so many amazing yet really long tracks. Anyone have a favourite Fela album?

Be warned by the way, there are some pretty graphic and disturbing images of the violent and turbulent times Fela lived in, folk getting shot etc.

Los Saicos - ¡Demolición!

The first of six 7" vinyls from perchance the best band that ever was. LOS SAICOS.

Music had its share of rebels and rockin' rumblers in the mid-sixties, but none broke down the bars and stampeded through the urban jungle, instilling fear in the weak and exhilaration in the strong quite like Los Saicos, the short-lived, highly influential garage band from Lima, Peru, who played from 1964-1966. Los Saicos knocked down those walls with the primal urge to play unbridled rock n roll with attitude and vigor. Their music attacked like a feral rabid dog - everyone in Lima was infected. Whereas most Peruvian bands were playing covers of American/English rock n roll groups, Los Saicos stood out from their peers, writing and performing originals no one had ever heard before. In fact, they had very little to no knowledge of the Nuggets-type garage bands performing in the US and UK. In 1965, they scored their first major hit, "Demolició which swept across the country and across South America.

The band, comprised of Erwin Flores (lead vocals, guitar), Cér "Papi" Castrillóvocals, bass guitar), Rolando Carpio (lead guitar), and Pancho Guevara (vocals, drums), released a total of six singles before calling it quits a year later. Though Los Saicos remained relatively obscure for the rest of the 20th century, the influential torch they lit forty-five years ago still shines brightly on modern garage-punk bands, and shows no signs of burning out anytime soon.

The Vampires Of Dartmoore - Dracula's Music Cabinet (1969)

Spooky German psychedelic exotica ? Ultra rare late sixties proto hip hop moogsploitation? Whatever this is I like it. A soundtrack to a film that was never made, by a band that no one can name, on an amount of acid no one should take. Well maybe now and again, special occasions etc . . . .

Honestly though, the use of samples and the obvious familiarity with quite technical studio effects (for 1969) makes this sound like it was made in 96, not 69. Reminds me of Tipsy,Sukia and Funki Porcini.

The Bad Seeds EP

The Bad Seeds’ story is a familiar one. A product of the youth-fueled sixties rock ’n’ roll wave, they enjoyed a meteoric rise on their home turf, the Texas Gulf Coast. For a band whose few records exemplify Texas garage rock at its finest, they didn’t last past the summer of ’66. But what they did leave behind is indelible: 45 rpm sides that rival the upper echelon Nuggets rock of the era. With an unmistakable sound that mixed-up early Stones with gutty Texas twang, the Bad Seeds put hometown Corpus Christi on the musical map in the mid-1960s.

This extended play collects the absolute cream of their original J-Beck Records output, from the pure Lone Star swagger of “I’m a King Bee” to “All Night Long”; easily the most Elevators-inspired jukebox selection ever. And to make it essential, the Bad Seeds’ ultimate statement, “A Taste of the Same,” makes its welcome return to vinyl.

Sully

This is Sully, one of the probably lesser known producers coming out of London's hyped post-dubstep movement. Annoying catch-all hyphenated buzzwords aside, there are few artists who seem to be doing anything particularly new. There are a few gems to be found nevertheless.

Sully has a talent for 2 step programming which I have a real soft spot for: satisfying melodic progressions and insanely tight percussion, shuffling high hats, drums that swing off the beat, and syncopation; plenty of space to shimmy your ass in between where the sounds hit.

Low quality youtube rips do no favours to the production here as usual, so I can only recommend you get some meaty k.b.p.esses in you through your usual digital data administration pipe.

You can buy from here http://boomkat.com/search?q=sully&fields[]=&commit=

These are 3 track previews from the E.P's

There is jungle and hardcore here too in the bass and the rolling snares, clever and economical use of vocals; what to me seems like a fine distillation of the classic noises from these genres into something current and fresh.

Rock n Roll Vinyl Rips - Emptifish

I was sent this 45 by the men themselves for use on a compilation a couple of years ago.
pretty sure it's still not available to buy which is a crime so here it is in all its trashy glory.

GIT IT!
Emptifish - Branksmere Sessions

Emptifish 1983 - 1987 - By Nick Beat. I'd heard about 'Emptifish' while running an illegal drinking den 'The Trash Cavern Nightclub' in Waverly Road, Southsea. These guys were somehow too hot for the regular concertgoer and I decided to keep a distance from the craziness of their antics. As time progressed the band built up such a strong following including many young and attractive girls, 700-800 turning up at venues that held only 200-300 that eventually they became the talk of the South Coast with their musical hybrid of surf/punk and early "Beatles", surprising many in the aftermath of punk rock. At this stage I became interested as I could either see glory or destruction around the corner. As the year passed by I contacted the boys and tried to coax them into a deal. They had charisma and charm but their own burgeoning success led them to confidence and belief in their own destiny. Bigger venues followed in their own town, but at this point a group of notorious football hooligans known as the 6.57 crew latched on to the group. They showed up at the Rock Gardens Pavilion in front of a huge sold out crowd, a fight broke out during the first song this was between Punks, Psychobillys and a mob of the football crew. The gig was abandoned. I guided the band to play further a field, securing gigs in London and the Home Counties. At this point the News headlines were for all the wrong reasons, many venues were trashed in this period. The band took no part in this violence; it was a mixture of their raucous edgy music and the clash of youth cultures. At this point I would have promoted the boys infamy and gone National but the boys just carried on regardless. The Band enjoyed the notoriety; this would ultimately lead to their downfall, not in popularity but the opportunity of playing anywhere. Playing away from Portsmouth should have been a relief for the band but at each venue a huge following would materialize, at one gig with three record producers who had hoped to sign the band, witnessed another huge fight in the second song and another great opportunity was missed. The band were now too hot to handle by me, clubs and record companies and had now come under the gaze of the police, the band pleaded they had no part in the violence but they were seen as the cause, an outright ban was put in place. The boys fought the law but the law won! A few underground gigs took place under alias' "The Manta Rays" and "The Ambassadors", but these again, were marred with violence. The band split and went their own ways travelling the world fulfilling other ambitions. Emptifish played over 200 gigs from 1983 – 1987 to enthusiastic audiences, sometimes a bit too enthusiastic. They wrote and performed approximately 70 of their own songs and released two EP’s in limited numbers on Crystal Records, now very rare. These records were often heard on the late John Peels night time show. They recently reformed for a one off gig and played on an old Napoleonic fort in the English Channel, The charisma of the band is still there, they showed off their legendary moves, the crowd lapped it up - it was like they had never left us - good luck lads, Nick Beat Emptifish - By Nick Beat

John Peel Tribute, Peel Sessions Compilation

So it was John Peel’s anniversary of death last week. As I recalled the manner in which I found out he had died (via text message, signing on in Partick job centre) and how utterly gutting it was, and how massively he is still missed by everyone with half a clue about music, I thought a wee tribute compilation was in order.  I decided to make a compilation made up purely of tracks from Peel sessions, which quickly got out of hand as I realised just how many Peel sessions I actually had. So I’ve ended up splitting it over two volumes. It’s pretty mental that all of these recordings were fundamentally part of the same radio show, split up as they are over four decades with basically every genre of modern music represented. The guy brought us Captain Beefheart and also Bong-Ra. Led Zeppelin and Lightning Bolt. Pink Floyd and Polysics. There will never be another John Peel.

Marcellus Pittman - Razz 09

I really feel that this tune deserves a post of its own after hearing it on the (brilliant) Theo Parrish and Benji B mix dsco posted recently. The juxtaposition of the rigid, 808 (?) percussion, especially them insistent high hats, with the lazy, live-sounding melody does me right every time.

First time in ages I've heard something and immediately rewound it, and again, and again...

Thanks Marcellus

Rock n Roll Vinyl Rips - Bunker Hill & Link Wray

If you've ever heard "The Girl Can't Dance" by Bunker Hill, you've got an idea what kind of incredible capacities a human voice can have. The song altogether, with Bunker's mind-blowin' caveman-alike hollering is so way beyond belief, that there ain't just enough superlative words to describe its invincibility. Bring it together with Bunker's other early sixties novelty masterpieces, and you've got there a load of the most powerful black rock'n'roll ever made.

Under the guidance of Vernon Wray he recorded three frantic secular singles, all backed by Vernon's brother Link Wray along with the Raymen. The debut disc, "Hide and Go Seek", was Bunker Hill's biggest hit, cracking the top 40 in 1962 and becoming a regional smash in the DC area. Two highly charged singles followed, "Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf" and the unruly "The Girl Can't Dance", and while neither did much business in their day, both enjoy serious dance floor racket time today.

The truth is far from that: Bound by their contract with Polydor, the Monks were unable to develope their music the way they really wanted to. In 1967 the Monks went on their own time and money into Tonstudio Pfanz near Hamburg to record this smashing Fuzz driven Freak Beat Version of Pretty Suzanne behind Polydors back!!Trying to fuck over Germanys biggest Record Label? It doesnt get more Punk than that in my book. Sure enough they got in trouble for it and this killer Version remained unreleased to this day. First ever Legit Re-issue in full Cooperation with the Monks. Mastered from the Original ( Only Known) Acetate. In Amazing High Fidelity Fuzz Sound.

Rock n Roll Vinyl Rips - Our Boy Roy.

Two gems from his earlier rockabilly hellcat Sun years. I found this original pressing on the floor of a used record store in New Mexico for less than 50p. You can imagine my delight.

I kick arse for the LORD!

Al was asking for Reverend Julius Cheeks recordings, I knew I didn't have any albums, but the name totally rang a bell. Turns out it's from a track off of this album. It's a great collection of funk laden gospel, every tracks a winner in my book . . . hope you enjoy it

Es Fs Ts

Ahoy here!

I've been meaning to post on the blog for a good while now. Most of you probably know me, but for reasons unknown my name is Duke Yowie. Please find attached the first copy of my solo efforts recorded between 2001 and 2010. Recently my computer blew up, and I lost a lot of my work, about 200 tracks or so. Some of it was already retained in digital and tape format. (At the time windows 2000 was very stable) So this is a selection of what pieces I have left. I have been trying to compile it all for a while using various mixing methods, but I just want to draw a line. It's really just a fucked up mess. So here it is "Es Fs Ts" (Other people are fucking assholes") compressed into just under 40 minutes.

Black Francis - 'Der Golem'

Black Francis of Pixies fame was commissioned to write a score for the 1920 German silent horror classic 'Der Golem' for the San Francisco film festival in 2008. He'll be releasing the music on November 16th as one hour 'Rock Opera'. Here's the film in it's entirety with Black Francis' score. The Golem is mythical monster which was created to protect the Jews of Prague but ends up running amok . . .

Los Tentakills - Surf Riders

Our infamous version of The Lively Ones Surf Rider. Get on your Architeuthis and ride!

You all know me. You know what I do for a living. I'll catch this bird for ya but it ain't going to be easy. Bad fish. It's not like going down to the pond chasing bluegills or tommy cods. This squid. Swallow you whole. Little shaking. Little tenderizing, down you go. Now we gotta do it quick. That will bring back all the tourists and put all your businesses on a paying basis. But it's not going to be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks chief. I'll find him for 3 but I'll catch him and kill him for 10. Now you gotta make up your minds. You want to stay alive anti up. Want to play it cheap. Be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers I don't want no mates, there's too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head. The tail. The whole damn thing. Mr Mayer. Chief. Ladies and gentlemen.

American OTT Pop

This track only really possible with modern computer editing, compression and multi tracking vocals: amerie - one thing. It takes vocal maniulation to such insane levels that the impossibleness of what is actually been sung amazes me.

The song is entirely created from a bar from oh calcutta by the meters http://hypem.com/track/924382

The second track i want to put up is again entirely dependent on computers, as timbaland just plain stole it from some poor coder.

And the pimped up pop version

Its a fine line between good and piss poor. These are some of the few tracks i think retain any class while still being unashamedly over the top modern american productions. Any others?

Sparks - Kimono My House (1974)

I fucking love Sparks. Been listening to this album all day and have decided to post it due to it's extreme brilliance. Sparks always struck me as what Queen would have sounded like if they were New York art fags instead of Cambridge University art fags. They have the high pitched vocals, the inventive and soaring guitar, the same over the top bombastic lyrical content and just the sheer creativity, intelligence and inventiveness. Glam with a brain. When they played on the old grey whistle test that old fogey dude that presents it described them as a cross between Frank Zappa and The Monkees. In my book that's high praise, not sure if he meant it that way. They did an album with Giorgio Moroder for god sake. They're still touring and recording interesting stuff, writing film scores and musicals and all kinds of shit, always creative, always pushing the boundaries. This album is their finest hour in my book. If all you know is 'this town aint big enough for the both of us', get this and check out how great every track is.
