Night on Bald Mountain

Been listening to some classical music recently, anyone remember this, from the end of Fantasia? It's bloody scary for the wee ones, totally nightmareish, skeletons coming to life to walk the earth, evil unleashed etc .The music is Mussorgsky. Seriously but, does any cunt know anything about classical music? I'm trying to get into some modern classical stuff, but I know bugger all really.

  1. My mate Frazer, who likes a bit of contemporary classical, says:

    "Aye lad,

He should get his ears round the obvious ones (Philip Glass, Steve Reich etc) then move onto the weirder ones: Xela, Max Richter (Max Richter is fucking amazing), Deaf Center, Max de Wardener, Stars of the Lid, Pan American, Loscil, The Dead Texan, Tim Hecker (I find it hard to describe how much of a wonderful, gentle headfuck Tim Hecker's music is). Those last six artists have all released on a label called Kranky, which was at the forefront of a resurgence in post-rock/ambient/modern classical a few years ago.

William Basinski is the daddy of the more drone based stuff, especially the album entitled Melancholia. Best not to listen to this when coming down."

Word to the KGJ for that info.

  2. Yup I've got hunners of Steve Reich, which I love, no idea where to start with Phil Glass but. Seen stars of the lid live, they rule, and have heard some of the other stuff you mention but will get on with obtaining the others.

Basinski sounds interesting, drone based sounds good to me, I've kind of been led into this line of inquiry by listening to drone metal like Earth, Nadja and Sunn 0)) and making the discovery that I can happily listen to tracks that last half an hour. The album is called 'melancholia'? that sounds right down my alley - I'm downloading it already . . .

    Thanks Scobe !
